Every year Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer invites to his offices the Manhattan students who won awards in that year's History Day competition. History Day is a nationwide contest much like a science fair except that it deals with historical topics; it is open to all middle and high school students.

Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer attended the Annual Power of Aging Well Senior Festival in East Harlem today where all senior centers in the community come together to celebrate the seniors in the community of East Harlem/El Barrio.  Along with Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito and Jessica Lappin, Mr. Stringer encouraged our seniors to stay together and strong through these economic tough times.

Borough President Stringer did a press availability this morning in response to the tragic drowning of sixth-grader Nicole Suriel during a class trip by a West Harlem middle school to a Long Island beach.

Borough President Stringer attended and spoke at several school graduations this week, including the 5th grade graduations at P.S. 6 and P.S. 165, and the 2nd grade graduation at P.S. 185M. He emphasized the importance of celebrating scholarly success, highlighted the potential impact students can have on their community, and wished them luck in their future careers.

Borough President Stringer spoke at the opening ceremony of the East SideMiddle School today. The school, located on the Upper East Side on st Street between First and Second Avenues, is the first new public school building to open in the neighborhood since 1962.

Manhattan Borough President Stringer, together with housing advocacy organizations and elected officials, brought attention to the difficult economic climate facing New Yorkers and subsequently called on the Rent Guidelines Board (RGB) to issue a rent freeze at current levels. Concerned tenants joined Borough President Stringer at the rally, which took place outside the annual public hearing of the Rent Guidelines Board at Cooper Union.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, along with Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, and former Comptroller Bill Thompson, spoke out against a controversial proposal in support of non-partisan elections at a press conference held near City Hall earlier today.
